Copper alloy punch. Cast rectangular section bar, bevelled at one end and lightly constricted, probably to fit as a square section tang into a handle, at the other. Extensive traces of black shiny material might suggest a maintenance regime entailing linseed oil, a technique for the preservation of non-ferrous metal especially favoured in the early post-medieval period. Bladed tools of copper alloy might be used with fabrics, to avoid the risk of rust-staining, or for leatherworking. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1750.
