SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: NLM-1C718B

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex or lentoid-shaped whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 5.5mm, and with a flattened circumferential rim. The surface is pitted with small crescentic and triangular impressions, probably teeth marks, and is patinated overall. The small size of spindle hole would permit a Middle Saxon date, and might even point to an association with intense activity of the period reported around Riby Crossroads. The surface marking might point to use as an improvised teething toy in a domestic setting, or to gnawing by other animals or vermin at a quieter time. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 700-850

Diameter: 28mm, Thickness: 7.8mm, Weight: 37.29gms
