A Roman copper alloy strap fitting or apron mount, probably relating to the Roman military. The mount has a heavy rectangular plate with a bulbous headed terminal extending at the base. The plate curves upwards on the underside and terminates with a triangular terminal. An integral circular sectioned shank extends from the upper half of the reverse of the object. The front of the rectangular plate is decorated with a perimeter of punched dashes; further lines are partially visible at the top and bottom.
Apron mounts such as this date from the 1st to early 2nd centuries AD and are almost certainly military in origin, representing either horse furniture or elements of military uniform. Cf. SUR-60FDA2, BH-AA8833, BH-495E08, and one found in a hoard of metalwork at Camerton, Somerset (Jackson 1990: p. 38/pl. 7, cf. no. 78). See also BERK-9B369F, NMS-A286F4 and BH-00C3B6.
