STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: LIN-08CE73

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A post-medieval copper alloy sword belt hanger. The object comprises a thick framed oval loop with a hook extending from the base.

Discussion (taken from https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/belt-hooks/)

The size and shape of the loop has led to such objects being described as 'belt hooks' (Goodall 2011, 360; Goodall in Saunders 2012, 107-108), with the loop slid onto a belt strap and something looped over the hook end and suspended from the curve at the base. It has often been suggested that purses were mainly suspended from such belt hooks (Read 2008, 214; Goodall in Saunders 2012, 107; Williams 2018).

If, as argued (Goodall 2011, 342), these belt hooks were used with metal purse frames then a date range covering the 15th and 16th centuries would seem plausible, straddling the medieval and post-medieval periods. Excavated examples are few: pieces found in Salisbury come from contexts that date from the 13th century onwards (Goodall 2011, 360), but the whole object type could be post-medieval based on other excavated examples; including one from Chelmsford, Essex, in iron, found residually in a context dated c. 1670-1700 (Goodall in Cunningham and Drury 1985, 56; fig. 34, no. 80).
