PLUMB BOB

Unique ID: LANCUM-087599

Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete lead plumb bob or fishing weight of medieval date (c. 1100 - 1500 AD). The object is oblong in form, with facetted faces creating a lozenge-shaped section. There is a forked spur at the top of the object which is all that remains of the original suspension loop; the broken ends are worn. The surface of the object is embellished with a raised design: on one face, transverse lines extend from a wide central ridge to the outer edge; on the other face, one side of the wide central ridge has a zig-zag pattern running down the face, while the other side is divided by a further longitudinal ridge from which transverse lines erratically extend. There is a small drilled hole towards the top of the object on one side which has not perforated through; the significance of this is unclear. The object has a light brown patina. It is 51.64mm in length, 22.22mm in width and 12.55mm in thickness. It weighs 58.22g.
