The reworked tip of bifacially worked probable lower or middle Palaeolithic flint handaxe of 500,000 - 40,000 BC date.

Description: The handaxe fragments has been bifacially worked but unclear if this was from a blank or a flank due to small size and extent of later reworking. It has a thin rounded triangular shape in plan, with a slightly convex butt end, rounded point and two slightly convex lateral edges.(mesal). It has been bifacial flaked with covering, scaled, low angled retouch. The butt end has broken and been heavily reworked as a useable tool in antiquity as noted by the fact it is patinated almost to the same degree as the handaxe. The patination is light white and there is some sparse iron staining dark to light brown across on it surface in small spots. The one small spot revealing the inner matrix of the flint shows a dark grey colour.

Measurements: 71.52mm long, 64.89mm wide, 23.99mm thick and 83.73g in weight.

Discussion: This object represents the re-worked blade end of a handaxe, due to the reworking it is not possible to assign this handaxe to the early or later industries.

Class: Bout-Coupé
Evidence of reuse: Reworked broken butt end
