Coin hoard comprising of two late Iron Age gold scyphates and a single late Iron Age gold stater.
Two gold scyphate quarter staters:
The two late North Eastern British Iron Age uninscribed gold quarter staters (attributed to the Corieltavi) struck circa 60 -20 BC are varieties of 'Lindsey Scyphate' S quarter staters.
1. Obverse: highly stylised boar
Reverse: S-shaped design with a ring-pellet in each cusp; a pair of anthropomorphic half-faces with curved brows triangular nose and round eyes positioned either side of the S-shape. Pellets fill the remaining space.
ABC 1773 type, BMC 3190 but more fragmented obverse design.
Diameter: 16mm; Weight: 1.22g
2. Obverse: highly stylised boar
Reverse: Reversed S-shaped design with a ring-pellet terminal; pairs of anthropomorphic half-faces with curved brows triangular nose and round eyes positioned above and below the S-shape. Either side of the s-shaped is a five-branched symbol (with possible traces of a sixth, shorter branch) with each branch terminating with a pellet. Pellets fill the remaining space.
A variant of ABC 1770/3, BMC 3187. The X symbol on the reverse (present on ABC 1770) has an additional arm on this coin. Instead of a box containing an X below the boar on ABC 1770 there is the ladder-like symbol similar to that found below the boar on the coin above and on ABC 1773. The boar's body terminates in a circular motif clearly visible on BMC 3192.The reversed S occurs on BM 2009,4114.1 but the ends of the S terminate in the ring and pellet motif rather than the usual arrangement of a pellet terminal and a separate ring-and-pellet within the curve of the S. A similar obverse is recorded in PAS database records LIN-B4C048 and LIN-38DC07.
Diameter: 16mm; Weight: 1.51g
One gold stater:
3. A North Eastern British Iron Age uninscribed gold stater, attributed to the Corieltavi, North East Coast / British H type dating from c. 60-20 BC. ABC no. 1716, BMC 182.
Obverse: A wreath and a pair of crescent forms
Reverse: A sinuous horse, right; below the horse is a circular pellet and a crescent design. This die appears to have a very small human stick figure (charioteer?) standing close to the horse's rump (cf LIN-A9F692). Pellets fill the remaining space.
Diameter :21mm; Weight: 6.15g
Discussion: 'Lindsey Scyphate' quarter staters are relatively rare finds, with around 54 examples recorded on the PAS database. The distribution focusses on Lincolnshire and surrounding counties. These three coins are all of similar date and appear to be from the same dispersed hoard of coins as two scyphate quarter staters of ABC 1773 type found in 2016 and previously declared Treasure (Treasure ref no. 2016T1032; PAS LIN-FD23DC).
