HARNESS RING

Unique ID: CORN-85CDD5

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast copper alloy annular ring, circular in plan and in section. The database has many examples of bronze rings of this size, and the consensus seems to be that they are harness fittings, probably strap junction fittings. One example, BM-6EEF3D, although incomplete and corroded, is the same size and was found with Iron Age and Roman pottery, metalwork and coins, and is dated from 50 BC to AD 100. Another complete example from Dorset DOR-E9EE18 is almost identical in size, weight and material. This ring is well patinated and shows slight signs of wear, where one side of the ring is thinner (4.2 mm thick) than the rest (5.4 mm thick) in section, making the internal circumference (16 mm in diameter) slightly oval where the exterior (21 mm in diameter) of the ring is round.

Jackson (1990) illustrates two bronze harness rings of the same proportions, and one with slight wear on one side like this example, from Camerton in Somerset, on p.49, pl.14, nos.155-156, which are dated from the Late Iron Age to the Roman period, c.100 BC- AD 100.
