An incomplete cast Late Iron Age to Roman cast copper alloy harness fitting, perhaps rein ring related, c.20BC - AD 180.
Description: The fitting consists of a D-section crescent loop with a U-shaped groove running along the arc. There is a central raised collar at the terminal of the loop where it meets the narrowed attachment bar. There is an offset flattened rectangular bar protruding from the decorated triangular raised junction with the attachment bar. The triangular junction is decorated with ring and dot surrounded by fine incised lines. The object has a mottle grey-green patina.
Measurements: Height: 31.63mm, diameter: 24.82mm, width: 8.93mm, thickness: 11.8mm, weight: 17.28g.
Description: Sally Worrell, National Finds Advisor on Iron Age and Roman finds writes 'This is an unusual late Iron Age to Roman (c. 20 BC to AD 180) copper alloy small rein ring. The U-shaped groove at the top of this flamboyant artefact may have held a coloured setting. Small rings such as this may have been an element of traction harness. Its form resembles the Y-shaped 1C finials documented as horse harness [element] in Iron Age Ireland. Without direct parallels, this rein ring may represent a British adaptation of an object from across the Atlantic archipelago.'
