A fragment of a copper-alloy Early Medieval to Medieval buckle, dating to AD 1000-1200. It consists of a narrow strip of metal, which has an angled and pointed oval cross-section. It has a curved profile in plan, although it might have suffered some post-depositional bending. The outside face bears an integral projecting animal head set at 45 degrees to it. The animal head has the moulded details of the muzzle, eyes and the ears; the latter are attached to the strip.
A parallel is known from Fincham, Norfolk (Ashley 2016, no. 29; NHER 25501), suggested as possibly being from a sword belt. A similar buckle frame with expanded heads at the ends of the pin bar is known from Bromholme Priory, Bacton (NHER 1073; Ashley 2006, 106; fig.1, no. 5; Ashley 2016, no. 32).
