A Post Medieval copper alloy Irish 'gun money' shilling of James II (AD 1685 - 1691), Dublin or Limerick mint, dated May 1690. The coin is 28.2mm in diameter, 1.9mm thick and weighs 7.01g. See Spink (2003) Coin sof Scotland, Ireland and the Islands, number 6580B.
Obverse: IACOBVS II DEI GRATIA; laureate bust left.
Reverse: 1690 MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX; Crown over sceptres dividing JR, XXX above, May below.
These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James II was attempting to recover the English throne and were ultimately intended to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.
