An incomplete copper-alloy buckle of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1720 - 1790. Only a loop chape remains. The chape is trapezoidal with two tubular hinges for the spindle and two internal spikes to the longer end.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The chape is 46.6mm long, 31.8mm wide, 2.2mm thick and weighs 7.5g.
A similar chape is illustrated in Whitehead, p.103, no.VIII. According to Whitehead, shoe buckles were fastened "further down the instep as they increased in size after 1720" resulting in more stable means of attachment such as the loop chape with forked tongue.
