An incomplete copper alloy Sword belt Strap Fitting of Post-Medieval date (AD 1550-1700). The object is the partial hooked plate. The plate is sub triangular in plan, with a transverse break across the middle of the plate, resulting in the loss of the hooked component. The opposing end has a rounded, perforated terminal to secure the object to a strap with a rivet.
The plate is ornately shaped with lobed edges and is decorated with scrolls. A rectangular panel has the letters IHS in raised mouldings, for Iesus Hominum Salvator while below this is a triangular device possibly comprising three nails, for the three nails of the Holy Cross. There is a second sub-ovate perforation below the lettering
Similar examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Scheme datebase: SWYOR-A3E343 and DENO-ABE001 have been recorded on the PAS database. Both bear the christogram 'IHS', with the hooked scabbard plates in a similar style.
