Description: Treasure reference 2018 T740; a post-medieval silver-gilt dress hook of Reads' 'Early post-medieval Class D, Type 7' (Read 2008, p. 83, no. 280).

The dress hook is formed of four conjoined fleur-de-lis radiating from a central hole inlaid with a large bulbous-headed knop that imitates a cabochon gem. The knop passes through the central hole and splays onto the reverse to stop it from coming loose. The arms of the dress hook are in moulded-relief with openwork segments between. A separate, soldered, hook and rectangular loop are located on the reverse.

Dimensions: length 26mm, width 23mm, weight 4.94g.

Discussion: This object falls into Read's Early Post-Medieval Class D, Type 7 'quatrefoil' designation for single hooked clasps with a separate attachment bar, and is closest to number 280 illustrated in his book (2008: 83, no.280). Other finds belonging to this group have been reported as Treasure and recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, including 2010 T538 (SWYOR-1EE9A7) and 2018 T210 (PAS-EEFF9E). This dress hook, as with those listed by Read, above, is dated c.1500-1600.

Conclusion: this item is more than 300 years old and composed of more than 10% precious metal, and therefore should be considered Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.

Class: Read 'Early post-medieval Class D, Type 7'
