A complete but clipped early medieval silver denier of the Merovingian Franks dating to c.AD700-50, mint of Marseille (MEC1, no 577). Ref: Grierson and Blackburn 1986: 149; cf. Chambouillet 1890: nos 107-18 (pl.VI-VII).

Rev: Anchor cross with the roman nummerals V, II either side of the shank.

The orientation of the reverse of the coin is uncertain. The coin is often shown with the 'porcupine' hair at the top with the assumption that below is a cross with pellets in the angles (e.g. Chambouillet 1890: nos 107-18). An alternative is that the 'porcupine' hair belongs in a upright position with the 'cross' and pellets making a devolved face with a cross in front (e.g. Grierson and Blackburn 1986, pl. 27, no. 577).
