An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy signet/seal finger-ring (c. 1400-c. 1500).

The bezel is sub-oval in plan and the shoulders are trapezoid in cross section, with bevelled edges.

The bezel is decorated with an incised design of a sub-oval frame which contains a capital letter 'I'. At either side of the 'I', and also at one end, there is an incised branch/palm.

This finger-ring is pitted and has traces of a green patina. The breaks are old.

Length: 25.0mm; width: 8.7mm; thickness of bezel: 1.8mm. Weight: 2.87g.

Signet rings with crowned initials and branches to each side became increasingly common in the 15th century, it is thought the initial was for the owner's first name and I (for J) is popular (Harvey and MacGuiness 1996: 93).

A Medieval finger ring with a crowned letter 'I' on the bezel with palms/branches on either side has been recorded from Old Sarum (Cherry in Saunders 1991: 42, fig. 12, ref: 17).

Similar finger-rings with a letter I and branches/palms on the bezel have been recorded on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example, see finds: BERK-61A415; BH-F168B1; BUC-2F1C55; GLO-D84FB9; IOW-050845; LANCUM-A1EC46; SOM-140B42; SOM-C126A6 and SUSS-EE0272.
