A Medieval copper alloy buckle of Meols type 4, probably dating to AD 1350-1400. The frame consists of a single D-shaped loop with a narrowed and offset bar, sub-rectangular in cross section and with a lipped protrusion on the outside edge to accomodate the pin, now lost. The frame is externally bevelled. A separate copper alloy plate survives in situ, with a rectangular front plate, decorated only with a slight transverse ridge at the base of the slot for the pin, and tongue-shaped back plate. An integral rivet projects from the reverse of the front plate, passing through a perforation on the backplate.

Dimensions: Length 54.0mm; width 30.5mm; thickness 6.5mm; weight 21.72g.

cf. Meols type 4, nos. 568-573 in Griffiths, Philpott and Egan (2007: 92).

Class: Meols type 4
