Lead button of late medieval date (c. 1400 - 1500 AD). The button is large, flat and circular. The front face displays a design in relief of the crowned facing bust of the Virgin Mary with floral sprays at either side of her head. The back face has a central oval spur, representing the remains of the integral attachment loop. The edges of the button are heavily fragmented. The object is dark grey in colour. It is 24.68mm in diameter, 6.52mm at maximum thickness and weighs 9.50g.
A similar, if less detailed, example is depicted in Bailey, Buttons and Fasteners 500BC-AD1840, p. 19, fig. 6.11, which is dated to the fifteenth century. See also LANCUM-F2870B, which is of almost identical design and was found in close proximity to this one.
