Cast copper alloy scabbard hook decorated with a groove in the shape of an S at the widest section of the body. The lower terminal of the hook has been bent over at right angles to the main body but would have originally been straight. The top of the hook is broken where it attached to the scabbard. The hook is made of a strip of metal, narrower at the top and bottom curving out to a wider section in the middle. There is a collar above the middle section and the foot of the hook ends in a small rounded knop with a collar above it. The back of the hook is mostly flat with a slight concavity behind the middle section. The face of the hook is convex in section. The material, size and shape of this hook is the same as CORN-FA49A6, also found in Cornwall. That example has the image of a lion's head on the wide part of the body, and is dated to the 18th century, on the strength of a lion-headed pommel illustrated in Wilkinson (1970) on page 152, fig.126, which is dated from the late 18th century. Other examples of more ornate scabbard hooks moulded in this Neo-classical style are dated to the early 18th century, such as an example on a French small sword, illustrated in Wilkinson (1970) on page 57, fig.49, and a German small sword in North (1982) on the front cover, which is dated to c.1750.
