Incomplete cast copper-alloy strap end dating from the Medieval period. Sub-triangular in plan, 30 mm in length, 11.2 mm in width, tapering towards the broken edge, 1.5 mm in thickness and 3.6 g in weight. The surface of both faces has a smooth brownish-green patina but in areas is striated with shallow scratch marks, at an angle of about 45 degrees to the axis, probably due to movement in the soil. The narrower, pointed end is damaged as it curves to follow the strap or fabric that it was attached to, but there are no further rivet holes and it is impossible to decide how much longer the piece was originally. The wide end has a square shoulder on each side of a trapezoidal knop which is 4 mm wide and 2 mm long. Two thirds of the upper face of the strap end is decorated with a raised sub-rectangular border, 2 mm thick, that follows the curvature of the edge including the knopped terminal and then tapers inwards to a lozenge-shaped knop with a pellet within an annulet in the centre. Within this border is a narrower raised line, 0.5 mm thick, that follows the same shape of the edge of the strap end, again with two raised pellets within annulets inside the curved terminal at one end and the tapering border at the other. In the middle of this section there are two rivet holes, 1.5 mm in diameter, one above the other. The narrow third of the strap end, up to the broken edge, also has a raised linear border within which it is decorated with lozenges of raised dots with a fleuret of eight raised petals surrounding a recessed centre within each lozenge.

Read (2008) illustrates a lozenge-shaped hooked clasp with very similar decoration of pellets within annulets bordered by a lozenge of pellets on page 44, no.159, which he dates from the Late Medieval period.

Egan & Pritchard (2002) illustrate strap ends with similar lonzenge-shaped decoration and moulded fleurets bordered by pellets on pp.147 & 152, figs.96 & 99, nos.80.65/4 & 4513, which date from the Late Medieval period.
