A small Medieval copper alloy annular brooch, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1325. The brooch consists of a circular frame, with an externally bevelled cross section, and a constriction to hold a fine wire pin, which survives in situ. six slightly projecting collets are arranged equidistantly around the frame, each holding traces of a degraded glass setting and with the space between the collets filled by incised transverse lines.

Dimensions: diameter 17.1mm; thickness 2.8mm; weight 1.18g.

Similar brooches are published by Read (2001: 108, no. 781) and Margeson (1993: 16, no. 58), the latter from a context dating to c. AD 1275-1400. Two examples in pewter were excavated in London in contexts dating to c. AD 1230-1350 (Egan & Pritchard 1991: 256-257, nos. 1344-1345). Hinton (2005: 219-220) notes that this style of high collet had gone out of fashion by the early 14th century, although base metal examples may perhaps be more conservative in style. cf. similar brooches on this database: WILT-B14B7F, WILT-CC371C.
