An incomplete copper alloy Colchester Derivative Polden Hill type brooch dating to the Roman period (c. AD 75-175). The brooch has a complete set of wings, decorated with double veritcal incised lines at either wing tip. The reverse of the head is concave to accommodate the complete spring. The top loop of the spring is secured with the remains of the lug at the top of the head of the brooch. From the head the bow arches downwards and terminates in a worn break at the start of the remains of the open-work catchplate. The rest of the catchplate and the foot of the brooch are missing. There is a central raised rib running from the top of the head down the middle of the bow, tapering out roughly one third of the way down the bow. The pin is intact and has been bent slightly out of shape. The brooch has a light green patina.

Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt (2012: 300, no. 26) and Mackreth (2011: 53, no. 1603).

The overall dimensions are as follows: 34.11mm in length, 16.08mm in width, 10.71mm in thickness and 4.51g in weight.

Class: Colchester Derivative, Polden Hill
