An incomplete Medieval high tin copper-alloy annular brooch of c. AD 1200-1400 date.
Description: The brooch is annular in plan with a circular cross section. The pin is missing and would have been rapped around the indent on the frame, both wire and sheet copper has been used in the past. The entire frame has been slightly warped. There is no decoration on the brooch frame and it is a dark grey colour.
Measurements: 22.37mm in diameter, 2.63mm thick and 2.72g in weight.
Discussion: Although easily confused with annular buckles the suggested distinguishing factor is that annular brooches have an indented point for the pin while the annular buckles have a free moving pin likely held in the correct place by the leather strap to which it is attached, Read (2001, 109) illustrates a number of examples which are dated to the c.13th-14th (Read 2001, 102).
