FIGURINE

Unique ID: LVPL-CA290F

Object type certainty: Certain

A small figurine of cast copper alloy depicting a south-east asian deity, possibly Lakshmi, although identification is difficult as the attributes are broken off. The figure is seated upon a small oval platform, with partially covered legs, the bare feet touching sole to sole. The chest and prominent breasts are bare except for a draped rope or other band that falls over them, a necklace or gorget formed or rasied pellets covers the base of the neck. There are four arms that join at the shoulder, the front two situated in downwards positions and the back two lifted. The rear sinister hand is broken off at the wrist.

The head wears both large hoop earrings and a headpiece that appears to be made of overlapping, leaf or feather like structures. The rear of the figure reveals details of a long braid running down the back and a criscrossing of the straps carried around from the front.

The object is probably of 19th or 20th century Indian production, possibly as a tourist piece.

Notes:

Assistance with identification of this item was provided by Emma Martin, Head of Ethnology and Curator of Asian Collections at World Museum, Liverpool.
