The hooked element of a hook-and-eye clasp dating to the late 16th or 17th centuries.
Description: The hooked clasp has a large square plate with rounded attachment lobes with square collars and a flat forward-curved incomplete hook. The lobes are set either side of the body and opposite end to the hook. Each of these lobes has been pierced and retain iron rivets. The blunt hook has a banded collar which is pointed at the body end of the blunt hook.
Measurements: 27.93mm long, 26.17mm wide, 1.79mm thick and 2.21g in weight.
Discussion: The hook matches Read's early Post-Medieval blunt hooked eye and clasp Class A, type 1 - oval. These are date c.1550/75-1700 (Read 2008, 164-171)
