A complete copper-alloy right-angled drop handle from a vessel, of Medieval dating circa AD 1270 -1600.

Description: The handle is complete with two vertical arms connected by a horizontal arm. Extending from each end of the vertical arms, at right angles to them are zoomorphic terminals. The terminals has a rivet through the centre of the mouth, with other features defined cast in relief with incised and finishing the decoation.. The animal terminal extends at a length of 35 mmThe arms are rectangular in cross-section but with rounded corners. There is an acorn knop placed at the top corners where the vertical arms joins the horizontal arm. At the centre of the horizontal shaft is a facetted knop flanked on each side by raised collar. defined by grooves on each side and with an upturned snout. Two, now freely movable suspension lugs with projecting shoulders and integral rivets are located in the space before the zoomorphic terminal and the vertical shafts. These lugs would have been riveted into a sheet metal body of the dish. The handle is mid grey colour with slight green-brown hue.

Measurements: 106.47mm long, 47.41mm wide, 13.9mm (including lugs and terminals, handle just 6.98mm thick) and 48.85g in weight.

Discussion: Egan (1998) page 175, ref: 487) illustrates a parallel found in archaeological excavations at Victoria Street ("Baynard Castle Dock") in London. This example has been dated to AD 1270 - 1350. A similar handle is recorded from a shallow sheet bowl from a hoard of 14th - 16th century metalwork found in Wales; such handles are thought to be used on a range of objects. These handles are not uncommon finds to be reported to the PAS, although complete ones are unusual see: IOW-6E4393, IOW-D3FF71, WMID-2A2DB5, PUBLIC-1CD565, NARC-56CA29 and WMID-5F526F. The terminals are also not uncommon finds such as KENT-F429F6 and WMID-06FF01
