A complete lead alloy weight, possibly a steelyard weight, of Unknown date (c. AD 43-c. 1800).

This weight is roughly cylinder shaped and is sub-circular in cross-section. The sides taper from the flat base towards the top where it is narrowed and flattened to form a suspension loop. The off-set circular hole has a diameter of 6.0mm. The body of the weight has a chop or cut mark, 20.8 mm in length with a maximum width of 3.1mm. The surface of the apex has six transverse cut marks. There are several circular indentations on the base.

The weight is grey. One half of the base is very smooth and the other half is coarse.

Height: 47.4mm; width: 33.9mm; thickness: 33.0mm. Weight: 270.31g.

A similar weight has been classed as a cylinder type (Biggs and Withers 2000: 33, ref: 78).

Biggs and Withers (2000) suggest that this type of weight first appeared around c. 1200. However, the ease with which lead can be cast and their relatively simplistic form would suggest that caution should be used when dating examples found outside of archaeological contexts, and a much broader date range is suggested.
