A complete gold Finger Ring of Post-Medieval date (AD 1550-1700). The object is composed of a D shaped sectioned gold band. The outer face of the ring is plain and undecorated. The inner face bears an incised italic inscription which reads: . wish . you . well + +.

Dimensions: Diameter: 15.78mm, Width: 2.70mm, Thickness: 0.85mm, Weight: 1.1g.

Discussion: Posie or Posey rings were a popular form of finger-ring from the 16th to 18th centuries, more often in gold than silver. Lettering and inscriptions can be used to try and narrow the dating of a ring. Those with block capitals being earlier and the lettering becoming lower case and more cursive and italic during the course of the 17th century and into the 18th. The inscription on this example is fairly common and still in use on similar rings today. The arrangement of the initials however is indicative of the late 17th / early 18th century, particularly the use of the long 's' and the tails on the 'h' and 'y'.
