An incomplete Roman copper-alloy flat, enamelled disc (sexfoil) plate brooch (AD 80-250).

The pin, some of the spring and the curled-over part of the catch-plate are missing.

The front is decorated with a six-pointed star with concave arms around a single copper alloy pellet of reserved metal. The points of the star each terminate in a rounded knop. The areas inside and outside the star were probably enamelled but none can be seen.

On the reverse, two projecting perforated lugs accommodate a copper alloy-axis bar for the copper-alloy spring. A spring chord can be seen below the lugs. The remaining part of the catch-plate is 'D'-shaped in side view.

This brooch has a green patina.

Diameter: 18.4mm; thickness: 1.5mm; thickness including spring: 6.0mm. Weight: 3.21g.

Compare with Hattatt 1989, p.344, fig. 203, refs: 118, 518, 1409.

Worrell dates flat enamelled disc brooches to AD 80-250 'Roman Brooch Timeline' unpublished Worrell (1997).
