A Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative developed T-shaped brooch, probably dating to c. AD 50-160. Only the head and upper part of the bow of the brooch survives. The wings measure 27.5mm in width and are cylindrical with a sub-rectangular slot cut into the reverse to accomodate a hinged pin. Areas of iron corrosion suggest the hinge bar and possibly the pin were iron.
The bow is D-shaped in section with a flat back and convex front. There is an incised line along either side running down the length and just above the breat there is a cnetral recessed pit, a raised knop, now corroded, with an incised line above it, and possibly, at the break a recessed cell filled with red enamel with a raised lozenge within it.
Dimensions: length 19.12mm; width 27.52mm; maximum thickness 7.31mm; weight 4.53g.
The us of moulding and enamel suggests this is a developed T-, possibly similar to those with three lozenge shaped cells on the bow, such as SOM-BA6D27, or those with one large lozenge in an expanded centre of the bow such as SOM-A4B469 but there is too little to be certain. Bayley and Butcher (2004, 167-168) suggest that such brooches form a group with a distinctly South-Western distribution (see also finds list in Wedlake 1982, 127), and can be dated to AD 50 to 160.
