STRAP END

Unique ID: NMS-22D7C9

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete Late Saxon copper alloy strap end of Thomas' Class A5 dating to the period c. AD 750 - 1000. The split end is incomplete due to old breaks. The plate is rectangular with a slightly tapering profile; the front exhibits a raised, incomplete panel of black niello with traces of a series of spiral grooves, possibly orginally inlaid with silver wire, although no visible trace of this survives. The strap end terminates in a moulded trapezoidal zoomorphic head which exhibits long ears, each with a circular recess at the top and a lenticular recess below, two circular recesses for the eyes and a pointed snout.
