STRAP END

A complete copper alloy early medieval strap end dating from AD 750-950, class A type 1. The strap end is oval shaped with convex sides, narrowing to the zoomorphic terminal. It has a split attachment end, which is shaped along the edge with two rounded semi circular projections. In the centre of these projections are two circular perforations for the now missing rivets. Below this the strap end is decorated with niello inlay in a Trewhiddle style. The main central panel possibly contains a looping beast with the tail at the lower end and the head at the top, and the legs to the right side of the panel. The panel is worn. Above this is an incised sub triangular shaped panel, sitting just below the split end. The terminal end is decorated with a moulded zoomorphic head. The head has a long snout which is concave on both sides, and has a rounded forehead. Above this are two semi circular incised lines representing the ears, with two incised triangular incised lines inbetween. The reverse is undecorated. The strap end has a mid green patina, and measures 29.8mm in length, 8.5mm in width, 3.4mm in maximum thickness, and weighs 2.84g.

Similar strap ends can be seen in Thomas 2003, page 3, specifically numbers 2 and 4.
