BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-CBC85A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete cast copper-alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Harlow, double-lugged type dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43-100. Only the head and upper bow survive, the pin, lower bow and foot missing in old breaks. The head demonstrates plain semi-spherically sectioned wings, a perforated double-lug projecting from its midpoint on the rear face of the object. Part of the spring and axis bar remains threaded through these. The bow is 'D' shaped in section and demonstrates a prominent longitudinal crest extending down its midpoint until the bow truncates about a third of the way down its original length in an old break. Preserved in rather poor condition with an uneven greenish patina, it survives to a length of 16.99mm, 17.46mm wide at its head, 3.01mm thick at the truncated end of the bow, and weighs 2.84g.

Similar brooches are published by Mackreth (2011) see vol. II, p. 36, pl. 33, no. 9592, for a close example.
