A copper alloy stud which is possibly Roman, AD 43 - 410. It is circular with a domed top and twelve deep grooves leaving pronounced ribs on the edge of the dome. In the centre of the dome is a circular recess which may once have contained a setting. The reverse is flat and solid with a central circular-sectioned shank of 5.5mm diameter. The end is burred to fix the stud to something about 3.3mm thick. The stud is 15mm diameter, 9.9mm thick. 6.6g. Similar studs can be seen in Roman Buckles and Military Fittings by Andrew Appels and Stuart Laycock, page 91, particularly Figure AA.10.10 and AA.10.11. Compare also SWYOR-1FE1C4.
