Roman (later 3rd and 4th centuries) bow brooch: The lower portion of a bow brooch, made from cast copper alloy. The upper half, which is the bow is curved in profile, with the upper terminal forming a broken edge. This break is not recent. The bow is trapezoidal in section. The bow leads to a vertical portion which is the bow and catchplate forming a C-shaped section.
The surface of the brooch has patches of a mid green coloured matte patina, otherwise the surface is abraded.
The brooch measures 20.47mm long along the veretical section of the bow and is 4.56mm wide across catchplate and lower portion of the bow. It weighs 4.24g.
The brooch is a bow type, but it is uncertain whether it is a Cross-bow, Knee brooch, however the sturdiness of the lower portion of the bow may suggest it is a Cross-bow type, which according to Bayley and Butcher (2004) date to the later 3rd and 4th centuries. The 'light' types of cross bow brooch, which have little decoration tend to date to the later 3rd centuries.
