SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: WAW-4E7480

Object type certainty: Certain

Medieval (14th century) seal matrix: The matrix is a pyramid type, which has a circular base. The reverse of the matrix has a hexagonal sectioned stem which terminates with a circular loop and a collar below the loop. The underside of the matrix has a legend and central device. The legend is unclear. The device is the profile of an upright squirrel. The detail is not due to wear and corrosion.

The surface of the matrix is abraded and has traces of a shiny mid green patina.

It measures 20.03mm long, 15.47mm in diameter and weighs 5.42g.

This is probably an impersonal matrix. From the late 13th century round seal matrices are between 3.5 and 4 cm diameter, becoming smaller into the 14th century (Harvey and McGuinness; 1996,79). This seal matrix therefore dates to the 14th century. Wildlife, particularly squirrels, hares and rabbits appear frequently on matrices of this type. Seal matrices of this type bearing imaginative legends in French or English and with decorative rather than heraldic central elements are typical of the 14th century (ibid, 88-89).
