A complete but damaged post-Medieval sheet silver disc/cuff link element (1662-c. 1700). Lewis form 1, type D. Treasure case no. 2018 T709.

This cuff link element is circular in plan and the edge is down-turned (bevelled) at an angle of about 10°. The edge is bent in three places. The rear face is concave and has a central soldered wire attachment loop. The upper surface depicts clasped hands with sleeves showing, surmounted by a crown with two small flaming hearts below below the hands. The background is stippled.

The surfaces are silvery grey overall and the front is slightly worn.

15.0 (length); 14.6mm (width); 4.1mm (height including attachment loop); 1.1mm (diameter of wire loop). Weight: 0.97g.

Cufflinks and buttons with this design are considered to have originally been produced to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza (1662), but continued to be used as a general symbol of love and/or marriage.

This particular design is as Lewis's Type D (2013: 6) and is paralleled by 2011 T636 (IOW-F1FB17) from Brighstone, Isle of Wight and 2015 T141 (BH-74F159) from Padworth, West Berkshire. Lewis suggests that such cufflinks were popular from the second half of the 17th century, when Continental forms of shirt became popular (ibid. 1).

Lewis, M (2013) 'Data Sheet 46, 'Crown and Heart' Buttons and Cufflinks', Finds Research Group AD 700-1700.

Notes:

The find contains a minimum of 10% silver and predates 1718. It thus qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of precious metal content and age.
