Copper alloy harness pendant. Cast heater shield-shaped plate with an oval suspension loop at right angles to its display plane. The shield is charged with a lion rampant left against an enamelled field of an indeterminate tint, either black [sable] or dark blue [azure]; the tail of the lion may be forked. The colour of the lion, which was presumably a metal [i.e. silver/argent or gold/or] is uncertain. The lion or leopard [in or] was associated with England from the 13th century onwards, and [in argent] later with the Dukes of Norfolk. The loop is now open at its top. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1350
