A copper-alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date, c.AD 75 - 175. The head is ovate and heavily corroded to the reverse where a spring of four turns can be seen, one of which extends to form a worn tapering pin.
An ovate sectioned bow extends from the front of the head, bending at 90 degrees to a D-shaped bow. A flattened circular flange is present mid-way along the brooch, flanked by circumferential collars.
The lower bow terminates in a rounded foot knop and a rolled catchplate projects from the reverse.
The metal is a dark greenish, with spots of orange rust. The brooch is 50.1mm long, 11.4mm wide, 11.2mm thick (spring) and weighs 13g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.326, fig.185 and are dated to circa AD 75 - 175.
