Copper alloy and iron hinge, associated with a scrap of leather. Two elements of a hinged copper alloy mount, possibly a book fitting given their reported association with leather. One element is a plate with a trefoil end; the other is pointed with rounded shoulders. The former bears a pair of rivets, both burred and possibly of ferrous metal; the latter has a drilled hole of diameter 1.8mm, lightly countersunk. Another steel pin may pass through both hinged elements, evidenced by extruded corrosion around the hinge. The object appears coated in black shiny material, possibly an original treatment with oil, though perhaps exacerbated or masked by treatment by the finder; the staining is most noticeable on the putative ferrous corrosion and fittings. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700.
