SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: NMS-0D5B3F

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Medieval lead spindle whorl, bi-convex with many rather irregular radial ribs and a few pellets on both faces. Similar to examples from Meols (Egan, G. in Griffiths et al. 2007, no. 2188 and nos. 2197-2200) and one from an early 16th-cent. context at the Augustinian Friary, Leicester, complete with its wooden spindle (Mellor and Pierce 1981, 139-40, fig.51 no.71). It is possible that the latter object was residual, but it is unlikely to have been very ancient when deposited in the context, in view of its completeness. Diameter 34.5mm, thickness 9.5mm, hole diameter 10mm. Weight 37.83g. 15th - early 16th century.
