Unique ID: NARC-F7D632

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy Cruciform Brooch of Early Medieval date (AD 475-550). The object is composed of a sub-rectangular headplate divided into three smaller vertically set rectangular panels; the central panel is slightly proud of the flanking panels. The central panel is decorated at the left and right perimeter with a row of punched ring and dots. The top and bottom perimeters of the headplate are slightly concave. To the upper, left and right of the headplate is a half-rounded copper alloy collared knop, cast integrally with the headplate.

The bow is arched and has a pronounced rib running down the centre. In each corner of the bow is a short incised diagonal line. Below the bow is a transverse break resulting in the loss of the lower portion of the bow, foot and catchplate. The pin is also missing. The back of the object is undecorated and a partially retained attachment loop is present in the centre of the headplate

The metal is a dark green in colour with areas of lighter green corrosion by-product.
