Object type certainty: Probably

A cast lead alloy probable trade weight probably dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is sub-triangular with rounded corners, but is probably intended to be shield shaped (flat top with curved sides meeting at a point at the base). The central area is much thicker than the edge. The centre of the top face may once have been decorated but the design is no longer legible. There is a 3.6mm diameter circular perforation in the centre of the shield.

The weight has a well developed white patina. It is 33.1mm long, 25.4mm wide and 6.2mm thick. 26.1g. It was probably intended to be a 1 ounce weight.

Similar weights are also discussed and illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection, pages 34 - 40. Compare SWYOR-F6C22B.
