Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete but broken post-Medieval copper-alloy dress-hook (c. 1500-c. 1650). Read Class E, Type 7 (heart shaped).

A break has occurred at the junction between the plate and hook.

The object is moulded at the front, flat and plain at the rear. It has a sub-rectangular/trapezoidal attachment loop, 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. The width of the attachment loop is 11.8mm. The plate/body is heart-shaped and at the front an open heart in low relief has a central trefoil pointing inwards at its top. A small pellet above the centre of the heart projects slightly into the loop. A swag at each side of the heart extends almost to the tops of the sides of the heart; they consist of a blind hole with pointed protrusions above and below. The swags join and taper into the hook. The recurving hook is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear and terminates with a sharp point.

The metal has corroded to a reddish brown colour with some patches of light green corrosion products on both faces. The surface of the rear face is coarse. The break is recent.

Length: 29.0mm; width: 16.8mm; thickness: 1.4mm; thickness including hook: 7.0mm. Weight: 1.71g.

A dress-hook with a similar design has been published and classified as a Read Class E, Type 7 (heart shaped). Read 2008: 112, ref: 452.
