Unique ID: SOM-A6A984

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete post medieval copper alloy mount, probably depicting an acorn, dating to the period c.AD 1600-1700. The mount is pointed oval in shape, slightly wider towards one end than centrally, and D shaped in cross section. The obverse is mostly flat but slightly convex in the area between the lugs. Faint traces of a cross-hatched design can be seen on the lower/wider half of the obverse to indicate the husk or cup of the acorn. The reverse is flat and undecorated, with the remains of two attachment lugs situated on the longitudinal axis, the one in the narrower end being slightly off-centre of the longer axis. The lugs terminate in worn, pointed breaks. There is a brown patina on the surface.

The mount measures 20.4mm in length, 8.7mm in width, 1.9mm in thickness (excluding the lugs); the lugs are 1.2mm and 2.2mm in height, the larger at the wider end. The mount weighs 1.24g.

The mount is very similar to SOM-4A45A3, whose entry cites Read (2001: 37), fig. 22, nos.327 & 332 for other similar examples.
