An incomplete cast copper-alloy Medieval to post-Medieval copper-alloy purse bar (c. 1450-c. 1550).

Description: The purse bar is incomplete, with the arms terminating in breaks. The central block is square and has a vertical hole to accommodate the shank of the suspension loop. This hole enables the suspension loop of the purse to rotate. The loop is circular in plan and is circular in cross section. The loop still rotates freely in the central block. Between the central block and the loop there is a collar integral with the loop. At the opposite end of the shank there is a separate copper-alloy cylindrical rove secured by the burred-over shaft end. Each arm of the bar is seperated from the central block by a animal head from which the arm projects. On arm is broken just past where projects from the mouth, the other extends further. The central box is decorated on each face with nielloed letter, a large capital 'T' on oneside and a capital 'M' on the other, likely the owner initals. This purse bar has a brown patina with extensive dark green patches and the breaks are old and abraded.

Measurements: Height 54.5mm. width 55.15mm (loop: 24.03mm in diameter); 10.9mm thick (at the block, 3.82mm thick on the loop) and 29.29g in weight.

Discussion: Similar purse bars have been discussed by David Williams (2018), who would discuss this example is probably that of a Type A,1 which have a circular section and the arms emerge from a pair of devolved gripping animal heads which abut the central block.
