Object type certainty: Certain

A complete cast copper-alloy purse hanger dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. The object comprises of three arches, the central arch being the largest. Each side of the outer arches, thinned terminals with circular knops extend-from which the hanger would originally have been suspended from a belt by means of separate loops or riveted fittings. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 52.48mm in length, 3.49mm wide at the central bar by 2.58mm thick, and weighs 3.09g.

Purse hangers were designed to swing freely from a bar mount on a girdle, when not used to attach purses to belts such objects were often used to suspend knives. A close parallel can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 223; ref. 1198) dating to the second half of the 14th century. A similar example has been recorded on the PAS database, see IOW-1A1B07.
