Small circular cast cu-alloy weight, probably dating 1700 to 1900AD. The weight is circular with a wide raised rim on the top and an indented centre on the back. There are two pairs of incised concentric circles on the front. The weight was part of a 'nest of weights' and has a small rim around the upper surface in which a small weight would have fitted. The weight itself would have sat in the heavier weight underneath. The upper surface is stamped with two crowns and a castle and no initials. The weight has no parallels on the database although a triple towered castle can be a symbol of Exeter it also may well be continental. The tower or castle is a common motif on trade weights but may be referring to the castles on Spanish coins which represent Castille. There is an example of a circular Spanish coin weight for weighing against the 4 reales coin, depicting a castle, recorded in LANCUM-E4DB06 which is dated from the 17th century. The diameter is 25mm and the weight 12.13g.
