A lead spindle whorl of possible Early Medieval to post-Medieval date.
Description: The spindle whorl is circular in plan and D-shaped in cross section. The central suspension hole is 10.2mm in diameter. The whorl and is an off grey-white colour.
Measurements: 30.85mm in diameter, 9.62mm thick and 41.83g in weight
Discussion: Walton Rogers (in the Flixborough volume and York Fasicules) classifies spindle whorls with D-shaped cross-sections as class A1 and dates them to c. AD500-1000. The central hole is over 10mm which would suggest a date later Saxon. It should be noted that whorls are very variable and the Flixborough publication's typology is very much focused on the North and east of the country.
