Roman rim sherd; wheel thrown ceramic vessels. The sherd is a rim sherd, of a fabric similar to, or what is known as Severn Valley ware. This type of pottery was produced throughout the Roman Period, in the Severn Valley area, and typically consisted of jars, jugs, flagons, bowls and tankards. The rim is from probably a jar with an everted rim, such as those illustrated in Webster (1976), Figure 4. No. 22 which dates to the 2nd to 3rd century. It weighs 23.84g. The diameter of the rim is c. 370mm.

Hardness: fairly hard but the surface is powdery.
